Biographie:

Lawren Harris est né le 23 octobre 1885 à Brantford en Ontario, Canada. Il appartenait à une famille riche, les Harrises héritiers de la fortune industrielle des Massey-Harris.

Il s'est intéressé à la peinture très tôt, et a étudié l'Art en Allemagne de 1904 à 1907.

A son retour, il a travaillé brièvement avec Norman Duncan, illustrant d'ailleurs plusieurs de ses récits.

L. Harris fût le seul membre du Groupe de Sept à être dégagé de tout problème financier tout au long de sa vie grâce à sa fortune personnelle et se mettant ainsi à l'abris des tentations éventuelles de la publicité.

Harris est également le seul membre du Groupe des Sept à avoir continué à remettre en question ses sources d'inspiration, ne se reposant jamais longtemps sur le même modèle ou sur un thème récurant. Bien après que le Groupe des Sept se soit séparé, L. Harris a continué à se remettre en question et à faire évoluer progressivement son art vers la peinture abstraite et l'Art Déco. Il a aussi publié un recueil de poésies en 1922.

Son intérêt pour la représentation des paysages scandinaves fût l'un des facteurs déterminants dans la création du Groupe des Sept et de son intérêt pictural pour les forêts de l'Ontario, genre et inspiration dans lesquels, avec talent, il s'est fortement impliqué. C'est aussi lui qui a ouvert les chemins du grand nord en peignant les paysages de l'Artique, des Montagnes Rocheuses, de la Gaspésie ainsi que d'autres régions extraordinaires du grandiose territoire Canadien.
